FINE ART 2.1
WEEK 1:
Make a video about a word that you chose for the initial walk of the term.

Word = OPEN

Process:

• Started brainstorming OPEN on paper.
• Split into - PHYSICAL, MATERIAL, ABSTRACT, EMOTIONAL, DEFINITION, COLOUR.
• thought about retracing the walk and opening everything I could find on the journey.
• then researched and Open by Rhys was the first link. I clicked on it and listened to the lyrics. Taking key words from the song, I thought of a video in response.
• Went to the lake and shot the video. Planned everything visually so the shoot was easy to comprehend.

Explanation of final video:

Open by Rhye was the first thing to come up when I google searched.

Key words from lyrics:
Shake in your thighs
Sound in your sighs
Love
Play
Don't close your hands
Pool held in your eyes
Natural spring
Gentle sting
Stay open

My interpretation:

- audio of sighs
- self love for shakey thighs
- game to play that keeps hands open
- blue eyes = pool
- natural spring = lake
- opening up to the elements

Assignment:
> Remake a work you have made in the past
> explain why
> any medium
>post process

Steps taken:

1. Made a list of the past projects I did
2. Brainstormed some possible outcomes
3. Made a decision- to remake an exhibition.

Taken from group exhibition 'observations' from term 1.3. I focused on routine and creating a new set of habits within 21 days. During self- isolation I made a daily routine to keep sanity.

What?
I painted a large canvas during corona self-isolation. It acted as a diary/ way to self reflect/ way to occupy my time during a new way of living.

Routine.
1. Wake up
2. Thank the world and be grateful for you
3. Practice yoga
4. Do a workout
5. Read outside
6. Research artists
7. Reflect and sketch ideas
8. Paint from 5pm onwards

Inspiration- online exhibitions. https://artsandculture.google.com/story/10-top-museums-you-can-explore-right-here-right-now/igKSKBBnEBSGKg
- ancient Egyptian art
- cave drawings
- modern art book
-art history book

Initial goal for remake=
Finish painting completely and make an online exhibition. Screenprint/ make posters of each section of the painting with a brief title to explain each part to the audience.

Refection=
on Thursday I realised that I had nowhere near enough time (a week) to finish the painting.

New goal= To make posters of a section that was already finished and carry on painting so as to finish it soon.

Problem = my laptop wouldn't download the adobe suits so I had to rely on using my roommate's laptops and also learn how to use the programs properly.

Reflection = I wanted to create more posters, but this acted as a good way to understand time management within in a week and was a good way to learn more about photoshop, illustrator, and InDesign.

Me attempting to finish the painting in a week...

Reflection:

I had some tech issues and I find it hard to use technology so I think it's good to push myself to use it. These are only a few examples, but the other files won't download for some reason.

Where to go next?

- finish the painting for an exhibition on the 27th September.
- make prints corresponding/ explaining each section
- think about bringing FOOT THE FEET into real life, costume ? sculpture? I think it's time to come off the canvas and try something new.
OUT OF THE BLUES
I made a zine as a form of art therapy to reflect on my tumultuous teenage years and to overcome my last hurdle of self acceptance.
As a progression from posters I decided to make foot the feet come to 3D form. This figure stands for grounding and overcoming fear (because I used to have a foot phobia)
I then tried to make the foot in a human sized costume format. But I broke my sewing machine in the production so this project is put on hold for now.
Reenact 14.09.2020
Last year I got overly stressed about studying for Erasmus. So I decided to reenact studying. I Attended 25 hours of a holistic summit about mindfulness, psychology and different types of therapies. I then proceeded to reflect on what I learnt and in response made collages about the monotony of human condition which I then made into a zine.

Something that struck me from the lectures:

Anxiety is a build up of energy that normally comes about when we know there is something we need to do or change.

To break the pattern of the human condition we have to get out of our comfort zones to find new outcomes.
Reenact and make public 28.09.2000

This week I had a kidney infection but on Sunday I pulled it together and created an ALTEREGO for my roomate.

When we reenact ourself in another form we break our pattern of human behaviour.

Let go of your ego and see the possibility to be anyone that you want to be.
Re-appropriate 05.10.2020

I started the week by researching the definition of appropriation within art and cultural appropriation from the organic library and other sources.

I particularly liked the observational stance of Paulien Aultheten as I am interested in the pattern of human behaviour.

My research then lead me to ethnography (the scientific description of peoples cultures with their custom, habits and mutual differences) and I spent a couple of days researching this.

I then appropriated the methodology of the 'Energy and digital living' project, in which researchers do a tour around someone's home with them in order to find out about their daily routine. Because of corona I only asked for the videos virtually, but this study should have been done in person so as to have further exploration of the quirks that people don't realise they have in their routine.

I started to make a video in which I recapped the videos I received with a further appropriation of a song and a youtube ASMR video. This video isn't finished because I got distracted by another project, which is beneath this block of images.

Reappropriate

I also watched a video about appropriation and within it Andy Warhol said that he makes images of things that he knows that people already like.

I then made some drawings and started to paint a canvas of a photo I took in France this year of my Dad. I know that I like bright colours and vivid paintings, like David Hockney's style and I thought I would try and incorporate his boldness of colour and holiday feel into my work to progress further with my painting ability. I have appropriated an idea, then appropriated an image to a drawing and then reappropriated this into painting.

Reappropriate. Week 2

This week I decided to continue with painting and researching art history. I then copied some paintings and analysed why they struck a cord with me. Then I attempted to recreate them with my own images. I didn't find the outcome particularly beautiful but I think it was a good starting exploration.

From here I re-appropriated my previous oil pastel drawings and started painting them in watercolours. I wasn't sure what I wanted to achieve so I treated these as experimentation too. I think that next I will paint them also on a larger scale.

Then I started to repaint one of the scenes in a David Hockney style. Every summer me and my family go to a beautiful home in France, where we stay with the Meyer's, our lovely Friends. It has a homely and nostalgic atmosphere and I feel as though Hockney also captures this in his paintings. The vivid colours for me evoke an eternal desire I have for Summer, which is why brightness, summer scenes and family are taking a main feature in my paintings at the moment.

The Cause

“This isn’t like any prison in the United States or any developed country, where you get your uniform and an assigned cell. Here, you are first sent to ‘The Church.’ You spend some time adapting there, then you search for a place to live,” explains a prisoner at the General Penitentiary of Venezuela, which is run by the inmates themselves. They settle legal disputes on their own, and even have their own tax system.

A drawing to recap 'The Cause' IDFA film.

There were people within the prison that were creating pots and vases. This imagery stayed in my brain. They had nothing else to do within the prison and found this to be the most productive use of their time.

Florence Given- Women Don't owe you pretty

Florence's debut book will explore all progressive corners of the feminist conversation; from insecurity projection and refusing to find comfort in other women's flaws, to deciding whether to date or dump them, all the way through to unpacking the male gaze and how it shapes our identity.

I read this book this week and it strongly resonated with me. I think my next work will probably be based on this book and the energy from within it.
